If you have an existing Dog Account, please do not create another account.  Additionally, if your Dog is inactive, do not create another dog.  Creating a duplicate account or dog causes delays and increases processing time for your application.

You can add a dog to your existing account or reactivate an existing dog either through your MyCity Profile or in Person at the locations listed below.

Submit your application:

• Applicants must be at least 18 years old to purchase or renew a dog licence.
• Licences are to be renewed on or before December 31 of each year. 

Online:

In person:
Complete and submit the 2026 Dog Licence Application Form (pdf) and apply at one of the following locations. Forms are also available at each facility.

If you are registering a service dog, a copy of the Provincial Service Dog Licence is required to accompany your application.

2026 Dog Licence Fees*

• Altered Dog (spayed/neutered): $37.55
• Unaltered dog (intact): $80.55
• Replacement tag $14.40

*Dog licences expire annually, on December 31^st of each year. The dog licence fee is a flat rate and is not pro-rated based upon month of purchase.

While not mandatory, we recommend having the following information on hand:

• Microchip identification number, or
• Tattoo identification number.

This information is collected to ensure that lost pets can be reunited with their owners.

• We use stainless steel, permanent dog tags.
• One tag is good for the lifetime of your dog and the tag number will remain the same each year.
• The permanent dog tag requires renewal each year in order to keep information current.
• If the tag is lost, you will need to purchase a replacement tag.

If your dog's tag gets lost, you can purchase a replacement tag for $14.10 online at MyCity

There are several reasons why all dog owners are required to licence their dogs, including:

• It is the fastest way to reunite you with your pet, should they be found. The City of Red Deer works with agencies like Alberta Animal Services and the Central Alberta Humane Society to any lost pet finds their way back home.
• Registration costs help fund the 'Spay/Neuter Program'
• It is a requirement of The City's Dog Bylaw. 3429/2009
• It assists in keeping more accurate statistical information to help with funding

The City of Red Deer uses a portion of dog licence registration fees to fund the Spay/Neuter Program. 

The program allows families to take the next step to keep their pup safe. Applications are accepted throughout the year.

A service dog is a dog that has been trained and assessed for safety in public spaces and helps a person with specific tasks related to their disability. A service dog team consists of:

• the service dog
• the individual with a disability
• the service dog handler, if the individual is a minor

Service dog identification card

A service dog identification card provides proof that the service dog team is qualified by the government. The card has:

• the name of the handler and dog
• a photo of the handler and dog
• a validation number
• a date of expiration

Recreation facility employees may ask to see your service dog identification card.
